Humans of Shuttle Time: Roxana Beatriz Hernandez

This is the 64th story in our Humans of Shuttle Time series, in which we present the perspectives of those who are involved with badminton at the grassroots level. Roxana Beatriz Hernandez, Shuttle Time Teacher with Venezuelan Badminton Federation, speaks about her journey in badminton:

Childhood Days

Since I was little I have practiced many sports, such as volleyball, softball, kikimboll, and then when I was 14 years old I started badminton. I come from a family which is not active in sports.

Discovering Badminton

In 2010 I saw it for the first time, in my town Tucupido Guarico State, and they practiced it on a sport court called Plazita el Sol. I was very interested as it was a new sport in our town, and it seemed fun and exciting.

Relationship with Badminton

In 2013 I started training in badminton. I participated in many national events, and I won many medals. In 2019 I wanted to feel what it meant to be coach, and from then on I’m still in this world. I have achieved many triumphs, where I have coached national and international medallists.

Memorable Events

One of my most memorable was the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2023, held in El Salvador, where I had the joy of meeting Olympic athletes such as Uriel Canjura, and the Open that was held here in Venezuela, where I met Olympic athletes like Nikte Sotomayor and Ines Castillo.

What Badminton Means

Badminton for me has become like my second home, where I have cried and smiled through many unique moments; where I have met extraordinary people, and it has helped me a lot to become a better person; where you learn to have a lot of patience. For me, badminton has been one of the most beautiful things that has happened.

Developing Badminton

It was a unique experience, because when I started training, I started with a few children, but once they saw the sport, many people were motivated to practice it.

Impact of Shuttle Time

Shuttle Time has motivated many girls and boys to get to know badminton, since it is an exciting, fun sport.
