World Refugee Day: Shuttle Time Brings Joy to Children in Malaysia

For 13 refugee children from Myanmar studying at the Agape Learning Centre in Selangor, a day of Shuttle Time in Petaling Jaya was a chance to try badminton, spend time outdoors and enjoy a day together.

Delivered by four certified BWF Shuttle Time coaches, the session brought together young people aged 13 to 17 in a relaxed setting.

Held on 16 May 2026, in the run-up to World Refugee Day on 20 June, children were introduced to Shuttle Time. This year’s theme, ‘Until everyone is safe’, reflects the importance of giving children not only shelter, but also support, routine and opportunities to feel included.

During the outdoor session, coaches introduced the children to the basics of badminton in a fun and accessible way. They learned how to hold a racket, serve and control the shuttle, before putting those skills into practice through simple drills and rallies. For many, it was their first time trying the sport and learning from certified coaches.

Pastor Daniel Kham Siam Muang, one of the leaders of the Agape Learning Centre, shared why the project matters so deeply to the community. “It’s all about passion and thinking about the future of the children,” he said.

He explained that opportunities such as Shuttle Time matter even more for children whose lives are often uncertain. “The badminton activity was helpful for the children’s minds and for them to get exercise,” he said, adding that sport can support their wellbeing in simple but important ways.

“Friendship is an important lesson through sport. How to mingle and how to make friends with different people from different backgrounds.”

He also spoke about the wider benefits children can gain from taking part.

“Confidence, creativity and helping their cognitive function too,” he said, noting that badminton can help young people think quickly, relax and grow in confidence.

Most importantly, he said, “they can have fun”.

That feeling came through clearly during the session and the children’s own words captured it best.

Zo, 13, said: “I had never played badminton, so it was fun trying it out with my friends and the coaches were really nice.”

Philip, 12, added: “It was a great day. I really liked working on my forehand grip. I enjoy badminton and can’t wait to play again.”

Looking ahead, Pastor Daniel hopes this is only the beginning.

“BWF has been a great help to the Agape Learning Centre and we look forward to more activities in the future,” he said.
