Egypt Para: Murugesan Leads Indian Domination

India emerged the top-performing nation at SPIRO SPATHIS Egypt Para Badminton International 2026, the final tournament before the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2026 next month.

Thulasimathi Murugesan led the charge, clinching three of India’s 8.5 gold medals. She topped the podium in SU5 women’s singles, SL3-SU5 women’s doubles (with Manasi Joshi) and mixed doubles (with Nitesh Kumar). Defending SL3 men’s singles world champion Pramod Bhagat secured two gold – one in his main category and one in SL3-SL4 men’s doubles alongside Sukant Kadam. Kadam also added gold in the SL4 men’s singles.

India’s remaining titles came through Alphia James (WH2 women’s singles), Jatin Azad/Shivam Yadav (SU5 men’s doubles) and Prem Chand Potnuru, who partnered Romania’s Alin Christian Baican to claim the SH6 men’s doubles crown.

The strong showing augurs well for India ahead of the World Championships in Manama, Bahrain (8-14 February). At the previous edition in Pattaya, Thailand in 2024, India finished with three gold medals.

Iraq also enjoyed a rare moment at the top of the podium, with Mohammed Jawad Khadim Alamshani winning the WH1 men’s singles and Mohammed Kareem Abbood Alameer taking gold in WH2 men’s singles.
