The BWF has signed the Sport for Refugees Coalition Joint Statement, joining over 170 organisations in a global effort to use sport as a tool for inclusion and resilience among refugees and host communities.
Co-convened by UNHCR, the Olympic Refuge Foundation, and the Scort Foundation, the Coalition advocates for greater investment in sport within displacement contexts, integration into refugee response frameworks, and stronger leadership from low- and middle-income countries.
Since the 2023 Global Refugee Forum, members have reached 529,000 people through sport initiatives, trained 11,000 coaches, and created or refurbished 160 sport spaces across 92 countries.
This commitment builds on BWF’s collaboration with UNHCR and projects like the badminton programme at Azraq refugee camp in Jordan in collaboration with World Taekwondo, which promotes wellbeing and social integration for displaced youth. BWF also supports Olympic Refugee athletes, including badminton players Dorsa Yavarivafa (Paris 2024) and Aram Mahmoud (Tokyo 2020), providing pathways to elite competition.
BWF’s efforts highlight badminton as an accessible, scalable approach to fostering wellbeing, protection, and inclusion.
