Africa Para: Nigeria the Big Winners

Host nation Nigeria emerged the dominant force at Africa Para Badminton Championships 2025 in Abia on Sunday.

In a sign of growing competitiveness across the continent, 11 of the 12 participating nations left the tournament with at least one medal.

The Nigerians secured an impressive haul of 10 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze medals, finishing well ahead of second-placed Kenya, who earned four gold, two silver and five bronze.

A standout performer for the hosts was Chigozie Jeremiah Nnanna, who captured three gold medals – SL4 men’s singles defeating compatriot James Thompson Akpan 21-15 21-9, SL3-SL4 men’s doubles alongside Obinna Precious Nwosu and SL3-SU5 mixed doubles with Mariam Eniola Bolaji.

The only other athlete to bag three gold was Egpytian wheelchair athlete Mohamed Rashad Ahmed.

Local superstar Bolaji, a bronze medallist at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, also claimed gold in her specialist event, the SL3 women’s singles, finishing unbeaten in a group of four.
