The first post-COVID European Para Badminton Championships concluded successfully in Istanbul, Türkiye on Sunday, with 191 athletes competing across six classifications.
Among them, four players stood out by clinching three gold medals each – Italy’s Yuri Ferrigno, Switzerland’s Ilaria Olgiati, Norway’s Helle Sofie Sagoy and France’s Lucas Mazur.
Mazur and Sagoy’s achievements were particularly impressive, as they defended both the titles they won at the previous edition in 2018. Sagoy retained SL4 women’s singles and SL3-SU5 women’s doubles and teamed up with Mazur to ace mixed doubles in the same category – a title the Frenchman previously claimed with Faustine Noel. Mazur also held onto his SL4 men’s singles crown and added the SU5 men’s doubles title alongside Meril Loquette.
Ferrigno’s triple came in WH1 men’s singles, WH1-WH2 men’s doubles (with Luca Olgiati) and WH1-WH2 mixed doubles (with Ilaria Olgiati). Ilaria’s other two victories were in the WH2 women’s singles and WH1-WH2 women’s doubles, where she partnered Cynthia Mathez.
Mathez, Charles Noakes and Oliwia Szmigiel each finished with two titles, while Daniel Bethell was the only other player to defend his crown, triumphing once again in the SL3 men’s singles.
