British & Irish Para: ‘Sweet Victory’ for Jauregui

Peru’s Pilar Jauregui (WH2) scored a major breakthrough at the British & Irish Para Badminton International 2025, defeating Switzerland’s Ilara Olgiati for the first time since their Paralympic meeting in Paris. The win marked a significant milestone for Jauregui, who had lost two previous encounters with Olgiati since the Swiss player claimed bronze at the 2024 Games.

“I’m so happy to win,” Jauregui said, beaming after her win. “It’s my first time beating Ilara since Paris and to do it at a Level 1 event makes it even more special. It’s a sweet victory.”

Jauregui’s joy went beyond the result. For her, the tournament was a celebration of growth in the sport across the Americas.

“I think we’re all happy because more top-level players are coming here now,” she said. “There are also many new players competing. It’s thanks to the Pan Am region doing so many courses for new coaches and athletes. Badminton in the Americas is really growing.”

For years, elite Para badminton has been dominated by players from Asia and Europe, but she believes that’s beginning to change. “Before, there weren’t many of us from America at this level,” she explained. “Now, it’s not just me. There’s Vitor Taveres (SH6), Miles Krajewski (SH6), Jayci Simon (SH6), players who won medals at the Paralympics (Krajewski/Simon claimed silver in mixed doubles, while Taveres scooped a bronze medal for Brazil). When they succeeded, it felt like all of us in the region won something.”

With more athletes emerging and stronger support systems in place, the Peruvian says her victory is just a sign of things to come. “We’re getting better every year,” she said. “This is just the beginning for the Americas. There will be two parties to celebrate. One for my medal and another for Guiliana Poveda’s (SH6) birthday.”

Ramli Seals Second Title of the Year

Malaysia’s Muhammad Ikhwan Ramli (WH1) claimed his second men’s singles title of 2025 with a composed performance against top seed Choi Jungman in the final. The victory adds to his earlier success at the 6th Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International and highlights his growing consistency this season.

“I’m very happy,” said Ramli after the match. “This year I started training very hard, focusing on tournaments like this and preparing for the SEA Games in Thailand, the World Championships and the Asian Para Games.”

Reflecting on his performance, Ramli credited his mental preparation as the difference. “The final was very tough and WH1 is one of the hardest categories,” he said. “I reminded myself to play safe, control my mentality and stay positive.”

The win over Choi marks Ramli’s second victory against the Korean this year, having also defeated him in the Dubai final. His ability to stay focused under pressure is proving to be a strength.

When asked about celebrating his win, Ramli kept things low key. “We’ll have a nice meal,” he smiled. “I like Indian food such as biryani and Thai food too.”
