Canada’s Joshua Nguyen is making a sensational debut at Pan Am Individual Championships 2025 in Lima, Peru.
The 19-year-old, competing at his first individual Continental Championships, has stormed into the men’s singles semifinals with a string of impressive performances. Along the way, he dispatched the host nation’s fourth-seeded Adriano Viale and Brazilian veteran Ygor Coelho, a three-time Olympian.
While he had to come from behind to defeat Viale 16-21 21-6 21-12 in the Round of 16, Nguyen got the job done in 34 minutes against Coelho in the quarterfinals, winning 21-19 21-18.
The twice Pan Am junior champion will today contest compatriot and top seed Brian Yang for a place in the final. Yang, winner in 2021 and 2023, beat another Brazilian Donnians Oliveira 21-17 21-7 to book his last four spot.
Canada are the only country to have semifinal representatives in all the five categories. Apart from the men’s singles, they are also guaranteed a women’s singles finalist, with Rachel Chan set to face off against Wen Yu Zhang in an all-Canadian semifinal.
