Christiansen Receives One-Year Sentence

Denmark’s mixed doubles player Mathias Christiansen has received a one-year ban from Danish Sports Federation’s Doping Board in connection with errors made in reporting his ‘whereabouts’ with Anti-Doping Denmark.

Christiansen, who had earlier withdrawn from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to which he had qualified with Alexandra BØje, will serve the ban until 21 July 2025.

‘Whereabouts’ relates to reporting to the respective anti-doping agency where the player stays daily over a period of time. As Christiansen had made three errors within a year, he was liable to receive the sentence.

“I am happy that there has now been a clarification in the matter and that I have been given the smallest possible quarantine that could be given,” Christiansen said, according to a statement from Badminton Denmark.

“I have in no way had any intention of cheating, and the verdict reflects that the Doping Board has the same opinion. Now I want to focus on my training and stand as strong as possible when the quarantine is over.”

In anticipation of the sentence, Christiansen has been training privately at the Yonex Peter Gade Academy.

Badminton Denmark’s sports manager, Jens Meibom, said:

“It’s a shame that we have to do without Mathias next year at training, but we recognise and respect, of course, that this is how the rules are. We are delighted that Mathias has now received clarification and is already fully engaged in training. We are of course still ready to welcome him back to national team training when the quarantine is over.”
