World Beach Games: European Qualifier Begins Today

Badminton internationals Fabienne Deprez of Germany and Gayle Mahulette of Netherlands are among 66 AirBadminton players who will be seen in action at the European Qualification Stage of the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games beginning Friday 9 June 2023.

To be held in Werkendam (Netherlands) over three days, the event comprises of the mixed team relay and the men’s and women’s triples. The competitions have a group stage followed by knockout. Eight teams – Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands and Switzerland – have entered the mixed team relay event, while men’s triples has 10 teams and women’s triples has eight teams in the competition. The winner of each triples event will obtain one quota place (three athletes) for the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games in Bali in August.

Deprez was a long-serving member of the German badminton team, with a highest ranking of 45 in women’s singles, while Gayle Mahulette had a career-high ranking of No.73.

The opening session starts at 2pm local time and will feature Denmark against Belgium (Group A) and Germany versus Greece (Group B).

The final of the mixed team relay will be on 10 June and the final of the men’s and women’s triples will be on 11 June.

In the mixed team relay, each tie consists of five matches: women’s doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, one triples (XT1) consisting of two male and one female players; and another triples (XT2) consisting of two female and one male player. The first match will be played until one team reaches 16 points; the second matches takes off from the score of the first, and so on, until a team in the fifth match reaches 80 points.

In the individual men’s and women’s triples, a match is played for the best of five games, with a game won by the side scoring 11 points.
