World Beach Games: Brazil Dominate Pan Am Qualifier

Brazil showcased their strength in AirBadminton, winning the Men’s and Women’s Triples at the Pan Am Qualifier of the ANOC (Association of National Olympic Committees) World Beach Games 2023 in Kingston on Sunday.

Both the winning teams clinched their spots for the World Beach Games 2023 in Bali in August.

In Men’s Triples, the Brazilian team of Deivid Silva, Matheus Voigt and Isak Batalha swept through Group B against Canada, Peru and Mexico without dropping a single game. They continued their outstanding form in the semifinals, beating Dominican Republic, and in the final, against Venezuela, winning both ties in straight games.

Peru won the third place playoff over Dominican Republic in five thrilling games, 7-11 9-11 13-11 11-9 13-12.

In Women’s Triples, the Brazilian team of Samia Lima, Fabiana Silva and Jeisiane Alves finished second in Group B beating Jamaica but losing to Dominican Republic in a thrilling final game, 13-10.

In the semifinals, the Brazilians proved too strong for Venezuela, winning the match in just 16 minutes. They ran once again into Dominican Republic (Alia Jule Acosta, Nairoby Ab Jiminez, Clarisa Pie) in the final, and this time they avenged their group loss by clinching the title in four games, 11-8 11-4 7-11 11-6.

“The AirBadminton competition was a really nice experience as we enjoyed many elements that we usually don’t find in traditional badminton events,” said Samia Lima.

“We watched our opponents in previous matches and discussed the best tactics to start strong in the final … luckily everything went according to plan and we were up two games to zero, in the third they changed a few things and took that, but we were able to focus again in the fourth game and win the final.

“We look very much forward to the World Beach Games in Bali. I’m positive that it will be an amazing experience and it will be great to play AirBadminton in such a big event. We will prepare well and try to get a very good result for Brazil!”

Venezuela won the third-place playoff beating Peru in 22 minutes.
