Tam Upsets Michelle Li – XXI Pan American Championships 2017: Day 2

Brittney Tam scored one of the biggest results in her career, upsetting Canadian compatriot Michelle Li in the Women’s Singles quarter-finals of the XXI Pan American Championships 2017 in Havana yesterday.

Tam overcame Li, who is on the comeback trail from injury, 21-18 21-15, to set up a semi-final against USA’s Jamie Subandhi. The other semi-final will see Mexico’s Mariana Ugalde against Canada’s Rachel Honderich.

Honderich and Tam won their doubles matches as well to stay in hunt for a double title.

Honderich beat Mexico’s Sabrina Solis 21-11 21-13 in Women’s Singles before teaming up with Toby Ng to overcome Guatemala’s Ruben Castellanos/Nikte Alejandra Sotomayor 21-9 21-14. Top seeds Ng/Honderich take on Peru’s Mario Cuba/Katherine Winder in the semi-finals.

After beating Li, Tam teamed up with Nyl Yakura and prevailed over Cuba’s Leodannis Martinez/Tahimara Oropeza 21-15 15-21 21-15. In the semi-finals, they face Mexico’s Lino Munoz/Cynthia Gonzalez.

Mario Cuba too made two semi-finals. Cuba and Diego Mini received a walkover in Men’s Doubles and will face Canada’s Jason Anthony Ho-Shue and Nyl Yakura, while the top half will see Guatemala’s Ruben Castellanos/Anibal Marroquin against Canada’s Austin James Bauer/Ty Alexander Linderman.

Men’s Singles top see Ygor Coelho de Oliveira had no trouble booking his last-four place, where he faces Cuba’s Leodannis Martinez. The other semi-final will see Cuba’s Osleni Guerrero against USA’s Bjorn Seguin.
