Mexico Go Down Fighting – XXI Pan Am Championships Team Event: Day 1

USA staved off a fighting Mexico 3-2 in Group B of the XXI Pan Am Championships Team Event Competition in Sando Domingo yesterday.

After getting beaten 5-0 by Brazil earlier in the day, Mexico put up an improved show against USA. Nicholas Waller/Nicole Frevold gave USA the lead in Mixed Doubles, but Job Castillo (featured image) fought to a three-games win over Howard Shu in Men’s Singles.

Crystal Pan gave USA the lead once again, winning her Women’s Singles bout against Andrea Rodriguez, only for Job Castillo/Armando Gaitan to take the tie to the fifth match by beating Vinson Chiu/Timothy Lam in a tense contest, 18-21 25-23 21-14.

The decider was a mismatch, with USA’s Annie Xu/Kerry Xu routing Jessica Bautista/Andrea Rodriguez 21-0 21-4.

In Group A, hosts Dominican Republic fell 0-5 to Canada and Peru.
