BWF To Award 2015 Major Events

BWF To Award 2015 Major Events

The Badminton World Federation will announce the winning bids for its 2015 Major Events at month-end in Athens, Greece.

BWF Member Associations and the respective candidate cities will know on Thursday 28 November, if they have been successful in winning bids for the BWF Sudirman Cup; the BWF World Championships and the BWF World Senior Championships, all to be held in 2015.

The BWF Council will hear presentations from the prospective hosts before determining to whom the respective tournaments should be awarded. A formal announcement will then be made at the Athens Ledra Marriott Hotel where the Council will be holding its annual meeting.

Two cities – Kunshan in China (Jiangsu province) and Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia – are vying to host the BWF World Championships in August 2015, following in the footsteps of Copenhagen, Denmark, next year.

Another Chinese city – Dongguan in Guangdong province – is bidding to stage the BWF Sudirman Cup in May 2015 while Helsingborg has been proposed by Badminton Sweden as the venue for the next BWF World Senior Championships.

“While Dongguan and Helsingborg are the lone bidders for the Sudirman Cup and World Seniors respectively, they still have to satisfy the Council that they are capable of hosting the tournament to the BWF’s standards and technical specifications,” explained BWF Secretary General, Thomas Lund (right).

“We look forward to hearing high-quality presentations from all four bids and to reaching the appropriate decision for each tournament.”
