The winners of this year’s BWF Player of the Year Awards will be announced on Monday 9 December 2024 in conjunction with the annual end-of-year HSBC BWF World Tour Finals Gala Dinner.
As documented previously, there are notable changes to both the awards structure and voting process from this year onwards.
There will be five marquee awards recognising the best player or pair in men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
The winners will be calculated from a combination of world ranking points collected during the eligibility period and votes collected from a panel of experts after every HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750 and Super 1000 tournament, plus the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals, as well as either the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (for season 2024), or subsequent BWF World Championships.
The eligibility period has been changed to 1 December to 30 November for each award cycle. The last tournament within this year’s awards cycle is the LI-NING China Masters 2024.
A weighting system has been established whereby the world ranking points will represent a larger value of the total sum of awards points collected.
The individuals selected to the voting panel will have had a distinguished career in badminton either as a player, coach, commentator, or member of the media.
There are two additional player voted awards with the Players’ Player of the Year (Men) and Players’ Player of the Year (Women), replacing the existing Most Improved award.
The Eddy Choong Most Promising Award has been renamed the Eddy Choong Rising Star Award and seeks to exclusively recognise the best emerging young talent. This will be selected by the BWF Awards Commission and approved by Council.
Nominees will be announced on 2 December 2024.
