Para-Badminton Elite in Research Project

Rachel Choong, Krysten Coombs and Suryo Nugroho were among 18 elite para-badminton players who participated in the BWF Para-Badminton Research Project 2017 in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The project (22 and 23 April 2017) is part of a three-year research programme that looks into the structure of para-badminton classification. The 18 athletes, hailing from nine countries, were required to perform several movements on court while wearing equipment that recorded their movements in 3D; various other kinds of data too were recorded.

The focus groups were Standing Upper (SU 5) and Short Stature (SS 6). Apart from Choong, Coombs (both England) and Nugroho (Indonesia; featured pic), the participants included: Sun Shouqun, Yang Qiuxia (both China); Akiko Sugino, Ayako Suzuki, Gen Shogaki (all Japan); Mohamad Faris Ahmad Azri, Didin Taresoh, Noorizah Rahim, Amyrul Yazid Ahmad Sibi (all Malaysia); Tay Wei Ming (Singapore); Wong Chun Yim (Hong Kong); Andrew Martin, Rebecca Bedford (both England), Niall McVeigh (Ireland) and Maria Bartusz (Poland). In all, there were 10 male and eight female participants.

Apart from the 18 para-badminton players, six players from Badminton Association of Malaysia also participated in the research. The six included Malaysian internationals Satheishtharan Ramachandran, Cheam June Wei, Yeoh Seng Zoe, Thinaah Muralitharan, Kisona Selvaduray and Lim Jee Lynn.

The research team comprised of Dr. Hanno Felder and Franziska Geise from the Olympic Training Centre in Saarbrucken, Germany. They were assisted by Dr Shamsul Azhar Shah, Dr Syamsul Rizal (both BWF Senior Classifiers from Malaysia) and Dr Komwudh Konchalard, BWF Senior Classifier from Thailand.

BWF was supported by the Malaysia National Sports Council, the Paralympic Excellence Centre and the Badminton Association of Malaysia in the execution of the project. All the athletes who travelled to Malaysia for the project enjoyed the research and practice sessions.
